Thank You Cards
Thank you cards serve two purposes – to thank people for their gift and to thank them for sharing your special day with you. Thank you cards or notes are a must when someone has taken the time and expense to attend your wedding and especially when buying you a gift.
No matter how many people you have to thank, a thank you card should always be hand written. Generic computer written thank you notes should always be avoided.
It is polite to say thank you within two weeks of receiving a gift – a month is acceptable if you are on honeymoon. If you receive any gifts prior to your wedding you should send a thank you note within a fortnight of receiving the gift - if not earlier.
Thank you wording
Thank you cards or notes are a must when someone has taken the time and expense to attend your wedding
There is no right and wrong way to thank someone. The most important thing is to personalise each note. You should aim to refer to the gift they gave and say something about it – perhaps how you plan to use it/how you are looking forward to using it or enjoying it in the future. The second part of your thank you should refer to your special day and thank them for coming.
If you’re stuck for ideas as to how to say thank you, we’ve put together a few examples which can be combined or adapted to suit you.

nofreetime tips
- As you open your cards and gifts, write a list as to who gave you what so you don’t forget.
- Writing your thank you cards will take a couple of weeks. To keep track of who you have thanked, tick off against each name on the list when you have written a thank you note.
- Writing thank you to a lot of people can seem quite daunting. If you don’t want to rush your writing - aim to write ten a night.
- Split the task of writing thank you cards between you – the bride could write the cards whilst the groom writes the envelopes. Alternatively, you could share the writing – and write to your own family & friends
- To add that personal touch, why not use a photo of the happy couple on their wedding day – your thank you card will double up as a keepsake for your guests.
- If you have your thank you cards ready in advance, why not take them on honeymoon with you. Writing them whilst drinking a refreshing cocktail will be more relaxing than doing it in the evenings on your return.
