What to Look for in a Hairdresser
Make sure you use a hairdresser with experience in doing bridal hair. This is very important if you want to have a wedding hairstyle that lasts all day. You should also choose a hairdresser you get on with and who makes you feel as relaxed as you should be on your wedding day.
Trial run
If you’re not sure what kind of style you want, you should consider having a trial run with your hairdresser should take 2-3 hours. At the trial run you can discuss the kind of wedding hairstyle you would like to have on your wedding day and experiment with different styles to find the look you want. Your hairdresser should also be able to advise you as to what style will suit you best given your hair type as well as other factors such as what accessories you will be wearing in your hair. You may be advised against your favoured style because your hair won’t hold. If that’s the case, don’t be disheartened - listen to their ideas and be prepared to try something different.
Your hairdresser should then make notes about your chosen bridal hair do so that they can re-create your look on the day. You will usually be advised not to wash or condition your hair on the day of the wedding.
Questions to ask
To help you find the right hairdresser, we’ve put together a list of questions you should ask:
- How long have they been doing wedding hairstyles?
- Do they have a portfolio of previous hairstyles they have done that you can look at?
- How much do they charge for bridal hairstyles?
- How much do they charge for bridesmaid hair dos?
- Will they travel to you on the wedding day or do you need to go to them? How much will they charge for travel?
- Will they be able to do more than one hairstyle on the day without rushing anyone?
- If they need to bring an assistant to help with the hair- how much experience do they have and is it possible to see a portfolio of their work?
- Do they do trial runs? If so, how much does this cost?
- When should I wash my hair before the wedding?
- Will they be fitting the veil or will someone else need to know how to put the veil in the correct way? Sounds a daft question – but it is often assumed a hairdresser would know.
- Can they show your bridesmaids how to remove the veil without ruining your hairstyle?
- Do they also do make-up, if so – do they offer any special packages for doing both make-up and hair?
nofreetime tips
- As you read through your wedding magazines, cut out any wedding hairstyles you like. Show these to your hairdresser when you meet and see if you can re-create it or mix a few styles together.
- Ensure you have looked at a portfolio of their work so you can be sure they have the flexibility to do different wedding hairstyles.
- If you only need someone to do your hair and makeup, try to find a hairdresser who is also a makeup artist. This will reduce the amount of people you need to liaise with and could save you time (one practice run) and money.
- When you see your hairdresser on your wedding day, avoid wearing a top that need to go over your head. The last thing you want to do is dislodge your hairstyle when you remove your top.
- If you’re having your hair cut, this should be done before you have your wedding trial. If you have your hair cut afterwards it may not be the same length on your wedding day so you risk it being too short for your hairstyle.
- Don’t wash or condition your hair on the day of the wedding
- Ask one of your bridesmaids to carry a small can of hairspray with her on the day to help if any touch up is required.
