Wording
There are mixed opinions as to whether or not you should mention a gift list in your wedding invitation.
Traditionally, wedding lists were not mentioned – instead, it was expected that guests would phone the parents of the bride and ask what they should buy. In these modern times, it is generally expected that details of a wedding gift list will be provided with the invitation.
Most couples feel awkward enough about giving details of their gift list and that’s before they’ve even thought about how to put their request into words. If your wedding gift list provides cards to send with your invites – you won’t have to worry about how to word your request. However if you don’t have cards or want to add a personal touch, we have put together a few ideas for each type of list to help you word your gift list request.
The following wording can be used for any choice of gift list:
‘Whilst your presence at our wedding is more than enough, we appreciate that you may wish to buy us a gift. Our gift list is held at .......’
‘We would rather have your presence at our wedding than presents. If you do want to buy us a gift, we do have a list at.......’
‘The biggest gift to us is your attendance at the celebration of our marriage. However, if you do want to buy us a gift, we do have a list at ......’
‘As we have lived independently/together (delete where appropriate) for a number of years, our drawers and cupboards are bursting with towels and pans. If you would like to give us a gift, we have a gift list at .....’
‘We have set up a gift list at ...... should you wish to buy us a wedding gift. However, we appreciate that it will be an expensive weekend for you. Please do not feel obliged to buy us a gift at all; your presence at the wedding is far more valuable.’
