Find the Perfect Wedding Florist

Word of mouth is often the best way to find a florist - ask friends and family if they can recommend anyone. Alternatively, ask the wedding venue whether they have a list of florists who frequently do displays at the venue.

The advantage of choosing a florist who has done wedding flower arrangements for your venue is that they will know where you need flowers, how much different types of display cost and they should have lots of pictures or previous work.

nofreetime tips

  • Don't meet to discuss flowers until you have decided your colour scheme, wedding dress and venue. Your wedding flowers should be designed around these.
  • Try to meet 2-3 florists to discuss your wedding flower arrangements so that you have something to compare.
  • Do not pay a deposit until you have met to discuss your ideas
  • Take along colour or material swatches to give them an idea of your colour scheme.
  • Let them know if there are any flowers you don't like
  • Obtain a written quote/estimate from the florist - detailing type of arrangements required and flowers to be used before paying the deposit.

questions to ask

  • How long have you been doing wedding flower arrangements?
  • How many weddings have you prepared flowers for?
  • Can I see a portfolio of your work?
  • Have they ever done the flower arrangements at your wedding venue before? If so, can you see photos of these arrangements? (Good florists will take photos of the flowers they prepare for every wedding)
  • What flowers will be in season when I get married?
  • What flowers do you suggest for my colour theme and style of wedding? Listen to the florist as they start suggesting ideas - do you like their creativity? Do the ideas flow?
  • How can I get the most out of my budget? Which flowers are more expensive than others?
  • Is there an additional cost for the hire of vases etc or will this be included as part of the price?
  • Is the cost of delivery and set up included in the price or is this extra?
  • Will they be arranging the flowers for you? If someone else will be doing it - ask to meet with that florist.
  • When will you put all the wedding flower arrangements together? They should be done a day or two before the wedding (no earlier)
  • What alternatives will you use if your choice of flower is not available at the time? (most wedding florists will be restricted to what they can buy at the time)
  • What will happen to the flowers after the wedding? Are these disassembled? By who?
  • If you want to preserve your flowers - is this something they can arrange or can they suggest someone? What are the options?
  • When do they require a deposit and final payment? Most florists will need the final amount a week or two before the wedding - in time for buying your flowers.
  • Will they deliver the flowers to different locations - eg buttonholes to the groom, bridal bouquet and bridesmaids posies to the bride and reception flowers to the venue?
  • Do you have a list of references?

The ideal florist will:

  • Show you lots of examples of their work and have a range of different styles of wedding flower arrangements and bridal bouquets
  • Come up with ideas and suggestions in line with your budget rather than pushing you to spend more.
  • Be approachable and happy to answer any questions you have.
