Wedding Cake
The ‘cutting of the cake’ is one of the most traditional parts of a wedding when newlyweds perform their first task together as husband & wife.
The wedding cake is one of the focal parts of the day as guests crowd round to take advantage of this photo opportunity. It’s no surprise that couples are now looking for unusual wedding cakes with a bit of wow factor.
Types of Wedding cake
Chocolate wedding cakes are becoming a more popular option
Everyone has a different idea about their perfect wedding cake. Some couples favour the taste, whilst other couples insist on a certain wedding cake design. The traditional wedding cake - made up of three tiers of fruit cake covered in white royal icing – still remains a popular choice. Unusual wedding cakes are quickly becoming a popular alternative for many couples.
- Chocolate wedding cakes are fast becoming a popular option amongst newlyweds. Chocolate plastique, ganache or cigarillo covered cakes decorated with fruit or flowers are the ultimate in luxury wedding cakes. If you’re getting married in the summer, you might want to check the venue has a cool place for your cake before you order. Chocolate wedding cakes tend to be the most expensive costing approximately £4-£5 p/head.
- Sponge wedding cakes are a flexible option to suit every taste. Choose from plain, lemon, orange, chocolate, coffee or carrot sponge and fill it with the filling of your choice. Sponge and madeira wedding cakes offer the best value for money costing an average £2-3 p/head.
- Cheese wedding cakes (also known as cheese towers) are great if you’re looking for an unusual wedding cake. They can also be served up as the evening buffet with crackers and bread – a great way to save some money. Expect to pay approx £1.50-£3 p/head.
- Cheesecake wedding cakes are a good alternative if you want a tiered wedding cake but looking for something a bit different. Choose from a range of toppings including strawberry, chocolate, honeycomb or cookies & cream. Typical cost - £3-£4 p/head.
- Croquembouche wedding cakes are made of patisserie filled choux buns caramelised together in a tall cone shape. Croquembouche translates as ‘crunch in the mouth’ so they tend to be quite difficult to cut. Alternatively why not have a cake made of chocolate profiteroles? Expect to pay £3.50-£4 p/head.
- Individual wedding cakes/cupcakes tiered on a stand offer a unique alternative to the traditional wedding cake. Typical cost - £3-£4.50 p/head depending on the type of cake.
If you really can’t decide, why not have a mix.
