Wedding Speeches

The best man traditionally delivers his speech last

The wedding speeches usually follow the wedding breakfast as coffee is served. Some couples choose to have the speeches before the meal so that those speaking can ‘get it over and done with’ and can then relax during the meal.

Traditionally the wedding speeches are in the following order:

  • The father of the bride should say a few words about his daughter before raising a toast to the bride and groom

  • The groom should respond to the father of the bride and speak on behalf of himself and his wife in saying thank you to everyone who helped in planning the day (unless the bride wants to have the last word!) The groom’s speech should end with a few words about his beautiful new wife.

  • (Optional) The bride may also choose to speak and say a few words. Most brides usually choose to speak so they can talk about the groom.

  • The best man will then respond to the groom on behalf of the bridesmaids before saying a few words about the groom.
