Wedding Vows

Personalise your marriage with your own vows and promises

The type of wedding vows you make will vary depending on your faith and the type of wedding ceremony you have. Most religious weddings follow a traditional format with little scope for change.

Although civil weddings follow a standard format - they offer a great opportunity to personalise your marriage with your choice of wedding vows and promises. The minimum vows required at a civil ceremony are the legal declaration (which makes your wedding legal) and the contracting words (which form the contract of marriage). You can then choose to make additional promises to one another. The main restriction is that your vows can't be religious or refer to religion in any way because your marriage is taking place outside a place of worship.
