Best Man Duties
The typical duties of the best man will vary depending on what the bride & groom expect, but the main duties are:
- Best man’s speech
- Assume the role of head usher - supervise the ushers and ensure they do their job properly
- Master of ceremonies
- Ensure groom gets to venue on time. The groom should arrive no later than 30 minutes before the ceremony.
- Pay the church fees on behalf of the groom. This doesn’t apply to civil ceremonies where the fees are paid up front.
- Take care of the rings. If the couple have a ring bearer, you will still be trusted with the real rings – fake rings are often tied to the ring cushion.
- Help round up guests for photos
- Pay any other suppliers who require payment on the day
- Ensure that the day runs smoothly – keep an eye to make sure there are no problems, that guests fill in the guest book and that wedding cameras are used throughout the meal and evening (if they have been provided).
- Look after the wedding presents – ensure they are taken home at the end of the night and stored safely.
- Ensure the bride & groom’s luggage and car are ready for departure when they are due to leave and help the couple make a smooth exit
- Collect suits for all groomsmen from hire shop a few days before the wedding.
- Return groom’s suit to the hire shop after the wedding day
- The bride & groom might not have thought of everything so if there’s something you think of that needs doing or something you could help with – let them know!
