Bridesmaid Tips

  • Ensure you know what is happening on the day and when. A week before the wedding, find out whether there is a schedule of timings for the day. If not, discuss the day with the bride to help work out what needs to be done and when – make sure all the details are accounted for and nothing has been forgotten.
  • If you have one, don’t forget to take your schedule of timings with you on the day – and check the other bridesmaids have a copy too.
  • Find out whether you need to have your hair and makeup done before you arrive to get ready, or whether there will be someone to do it for you.
  • Pack an emergency bag to have with you on the day. This should include: tissues, safety pins, lipstick, comb, hair grips, hairspray, pain killers, tampax, mints, tights, plasters (especially the ones for blisters and sore spots) and a small deodorant. Ensure you have access to this bag as soon as the ceremony is over.
  • The veil will be one of the last accessories to add. If you’re putting the veil on – make sure it’s the right way round. The teeth of the comb should point towards the back of the head. If you put it on the wrong way – the bride will spend the rest of the day worrying about it falling out! For extra strength – add a couple of hair grips to hold the comb in place.
  • Make sure you’re aware of all the finer details – where should the bridal bouquet be placed? Will you need to remove the wedding veil before the meal? Etc.
  • If the bride hasn’t told you what order you’re lining up in or who she wants to do what – ask her what she would prefer or make some suggestions. There’s bound to be something she hasn’t thought about.
  • Ensure you’re on hand throughout the day – to provide assistance where required.
  • Most grooms will sleep elsewhere the night before the wedding. Make sure you’re available to pop round for a glass or wine and a chat to help your friend relax. Alternatively, why not suggest a manicure or massage during the day?
  • Unless it’s a church wedding, there won’t be a wedding rehearsal – so you’ll need to confirm whether you need to walk in front or behind the bride and where you will sit during the ceremony.
  • Offer to take a bottle of champagne and glasses with you to drink as you get ready and bring some plastic champagne glasses to drink from.
  • At some point during the morning, expect the bride to need some quiet time. It’s a big day and she’ll need five minutes to gather her thoughts and prepare for that all important entrance.
