What to Expect on the Day

  • Ushers should arrive at the venue well before the guests (approx 45 minutes before the wedding) and ensure that buttonholes and orders of service have arrived
  • The orders of service are handed to guests as they are directed to their seats. Two should be kept aside for the bride & groom. These should be given to the church minister.
  • Guests with babies or young children should be seated near a doorway so that they can leave quietly if need be
  • 5-10 minutes before the wedding ushers should ensure that the route is clear for the arrival of the bridal party and that all guests are seated (ensure space is left at the back for any late comers)
  • The mother of the bride will arrive with the bridesmaids. When everyone is seated, an usher should escort the mother of the bride on their left arm to her seat at the front on the left hand side.
  • The bride will arrive just behind the bridesmaids. Photos may be taken by the official photographer.
  • As the bride approaches the entrance the ushers should be seated near the rear of the venue to help seat any late comers
  • If the reception is in a different venue the wedding party will leave first
  • Ushers should be the last to leave the ceremony so they can ensure that everyone has transport to the reception
  • The best man and ushers should help round up the guests for the official photos
  • Before the wedding breakfast, the guests will be asked to be seated. As the wedding party form a receiving line to greet their guests, ushers should ensure a constant flow of guests is maintained without any queue forming.
  • Throughout the evening keep an eye on the dance floor and get the guests dancing
  • Also keep an eye out for any elderly or disable guests and assist them if need be
  • Before the bride & groom leave, line up the guests to say goodbye. Alternatively ask couples to form a long arch for the bride & groom to walk under.
  • At the end of the evening check that everyone has transport home and help arrange taxis if necessary
