Alternative wedding invitation wording if the bride’s parents are divorced, widowed or remarried

The following examples show how the wording above can be adjusted if the bride’s parents are no longer married.

Hosted by divorced parents

‘Mr Michael Jones and Mrs Susan Carter request the pleasure of the company of ......’

hosted by the mother of the bride (widowed or divorced)

‘Mrs Susan Jones requests the pleasure of the company of ...... at the marriage of her daughter Sally Ann etc .....’

hosted by the father of the bride (widowed or divorced)

‘Mr Michael Jones requests the pleasure of the company of ...... at the marriage of his daughter Sally Ann etc .....’

hosted by the mother of the bride and step father

‘Mr and Mrs Jonathan Carter request the pleasure of the company of .............. at the marriage of her daughter Sally Ann etc.....’

hosted by the father of the bride and step mother

‘Mr and Mrs Michael Jones request the pleasure of the company of ........ at the marriage of his daughter Sally Ann etc.....’

If the ceremony and reception are in the same place.....

As you don’t need to include details of another venue, you add a note to advise guests what to expect after the ceremony. For example:

‘...followed by an evening of dinner, dancing and celebration.’

‘...followed by a reception dinner and dance until midnight.’

nofreetime tips

  • Guests often like to know the names of the hosts – putting both names on the invite will let them know upfront. If you want to invite the guests from Mr and Mrs Michael Jones, why not put the first names at the bottom with the RSVP?
