Getting Married Abroad
For many couples, the idea of getting married abroad is an attractive proposition. Why wouldn’t you want to get married somewhere different in idyllic surroundings? Weddings abroad often cost a lot less (< £10k) than a wedding in the UK (average cost of more than £20k).
For some couples, the prospect of getting married abroad can be quite daunting. Many tour operators and wedding planners specialise in weddings abroad and offer ‘off-the-shelf’ packages.
Getting married abroad isn’t for everyone. We’ve put together some advantages and disadvantages below to help you weigh up what’s important before you make your decision.
Advantages of getting married abroad
- Cheaper
- Weather likely to be more reliable providing you check the climate for that time of year
- Good option if you know you’re going to have to be ruthless with your guest list and don’t want to offend anyone – people won’t as easily be offended if they’re not invited to your wedding abroad
- Can combine honeymoon in the same destination - saving you money on flights
- You can celebrate your wedding over a few days - as opposed to feeling that the 'day has gone all too quickly' if you get married at home
- Chance to make your wedding unique instead of following a traditional UK wedding format
- Can get married in some amazing destinations with spectacular views and idyllic scenery
Disadvantages of getting married abroad
- Will be difficult for guests to attend in terms of cost and time off work so you may find some guests aren't able to attend
- Having paid for the flights - most guests will want to stay a few days or so to get their money's worth. Your honeymoon might not be so romantic with all your friends and family around.
- Some countries may require a minimum residency stay before you are allowed to get married
- Don't get to meet your suppliers such as photographer, hairdresser, caterer/restauranteur
- Language barriers - all your documentation will be in a different language
- May feel like you're on a conveyor belt as many venues have several weddings throughout the day
Your choice of destination may affect how easy it is to get married abroad. If it's virtually impossible to get married in your chosen destination, you could always marry in the UK and have your blessing abroad. Find out more about getting married abroad.

- Write a list of your own pros and cons and weigh up what's more important to you.
- Before booking – ask your proposed guests whether they would be able to make the journey. If the majority can’t – you may want to re-think whether getting married abroad is right for you.
