Choosing your Wedding Flowers

There are so many different types of flower in existence; you may find yourself trying to work out where to start.

It will be cheaper if you choose wedding flowers that are in season. The next step will be finding flowers to match your colour scheme. To help you with your search, we've put together a list of flowers by season and by colour.

Whilst it is possible to obtain most flowers that are out of season - you often pay more as they have to be imported from abroad. The cheapest option is to choose flowers that are in season - they also tend to be a lot fresher!

  • Spring flowers - allium, amaryllis, anemone, apple blossom, azalea, bluebell, broom, camellia, carnation, christmas rose, chrysanthemum, daffodil, eucalyptus, freesia, gladioli, guelder rose, heather, hellebore, honeysuckle, hyacinth, iris, ivy, jasmine, lilac, lily, narcissus, orchid, primrose, snowdrop, sweet pea, tulip, violet, wax flower.
  • Summer flowers - agapanthus, aster, azalea, beech, calla lily, cornflower, chrysanthemum, dahlia, delphinium, eucalyptus, foxglove, freesia, fuchsia, gardenia, gladioli, hydrangea, ivy, jasmine, lavender, lily, lily of the valley, lupin, marigold, orchid, peony, phlox, pink, rose, scabious, scented geranium, stock, sunflower, sweet pea, sweet william.
  • Autumn flowers - amaranthus, arum lily, astrantia, chrysanthemum, dahlia, freesia, gladioli, helenium, hydrangea, hypercium, lily, marigold, narcissus, nicotiana, rudbeckia, scabious, sedum, snapdragon, sunflower, tulip, zantedeschia, zinnia.
  • Winter flowers - amaryllis, anemone, carnation, chrysanthemum, cosmos, freesia, heather, hellebore, holly (& berries), ivy, lily, orchid, poinsettia, snowdrop, stephanotis, winter jasmine.

If you're looking for perfect flowers to match your colour theme and don't know where to start - have a look at our list below. Roses and Gerberas are popular wedding flowers because you can get them in so many different colours. If you're not sure what they look like - take a look at Google images.

  • Purple flowers - alliums, anemone, African violet, chrysanthemum, dahlia, gerbera, liatris, lisianthus, orchid, phalaenopsis, phlox, rose, streptocarpus, and tulip.
  • Pink flowers - azalea, busy lizzie, carnation, chrysanthemum, dahlia, gerbera, medinilla, nerine, pink, phlox, rose, stocks, sweet pea and tulip.
  • Yellow flowers - begonia, chrysanthemum, daffodil, dahlia, gerbera, hibiscus, oncidum orchid, rose, solidago, sunflower and tulip.
  • White/Cream flowers - arum lily, anemone, chrysanthemum, dahlia, gardenia, gerbera, gypsophilia, lily of the valley, longiflorum lily, narcissi, orchid, oriental lily, peace lily, phlox, rose and stephanotis.
  • Orange flowers - alstroemeria, aranthera, arum lily, carnation, chrysanthemum, crocosmia, dahlia, gerbera, marigold, rose and oriental lily.
  • Blue flowers - agapanthus, campanula, cornflower, delphinium, hydrangea, iris, muscari, scabious, thistle and veronica.
  • Red flowers - amaryllis, anemone, anthurium, bromeliads, celosia, chrysanthemum, dahlia, gerbera, rose, poinsettia and poppy.
  • Green flowers -the most obvious choice for a green theme are foliage such as ivy, ferns, palm, dracaena, spider plants and philodendrons. Bells of Ireland can be very striking as centre pieces or over-the arm bouquets.
  • Black flowers - whilst not black - the following flowers can give the appearance of looking black - cosmos, rose and tulip.
