What Can you Insure

The majority of insurance companies are similar in terms of the type of scenarios they insure against. The amount insured for each scenario will be dependent on the level of cover you require.

If you’re getting married overseas make sure your wedding insurance provider covers weddings abroad. Insurance cover will be limited to a fixed period of time before and after the wedding.

what’s covered by wedding insurance?

  • Cancellations - If you have to cancel for unavoidable reasons such as a family bereavement (immediate family), sudden illness or problems with the venue (double booking, fire, flood or going out of business). Wedding insurance would pay out to all the suppliers that would still expect to be paid if such a thing were to happen. See below for situations when cancellations are not insured.
  • Problems with suppliers - If a supplier fails to turn up or goes out of business your policy should pay out for additional costs incurred in finding an alternative supplier and reimburse you for any deposits.
  • Lost, damaged or stolen items such as rings, flowers, wedding cake, wedding gifts and wedding outfits (including bridesmaids and groomsmen). Wedding insurance will pay out for replacements or repairs.
  • Photography - If your photographs are lost or damaged, your photographer fails to turn up or his equipment breaks -most insurance companies will cover the cost incurred to re-take them.
  • Legal expenses are particularly useful if you end up in a dispute with a supplier if you’re unhappy with their service or feel they didn’t adhere to a signed contract.
  • Wedding transport is not always reliable - especially if you’ve chosen a vintage car. If there are any problems on the day - insurance will cover any additional costs incurred in getting replacement transport.
  • Public liability. By hosting a wedding, you could be responsible for anything that happens to your guests or any of their actions. Whilst the venue should have public liability insurance, if someone gets hurt or a guest causes any kind of damage - you might also be liable unless you have public liability insurance.

What’s not covered by wedding insurance?

  • Cancellation if one of you gets cold feet or if you have work commitments
  • Cancellation due to injury caused by hazardous activities or when under the influence of alcohol
  • Bad weather - unless the weather conditions are so extreme that the majority of your guests are unable to turn up
  • Stress - unless you’re admitted to hospital
  • Illness is not usually covered if you knew about it when you took out of the policy

Optional extras

Some insurance providers offer optional extensions to their wedding insurance policies to cover non-standard items such as marquees and ceremonial swords.

  • Marquee cover is not automatically included in most wedding insurance policies so you may want to insure against any damage or public liability if your wedding is being held in a marquee. If the marquee is a fixed feature at a venue - check whether they have adequate insurance in place.
  • Ceremonial swords would be very expensive to replace if damaged, lost or stolen.
  • Overseas weddings may be classed as an optional extension under some wedding insurance policies.

The cost of wedding insurance

Depending on the level of cover required, you can expect to pay between £25 and £100 for wedding insurance. Don’t automatically go for the cheapest policy before working out what your significant wedding costs will be and what you need to cover. The amount you pay will depend on:

  • Level of cover required (monetary and any optional extras)
  • Amount of excess

If you decide to have wedding insurance, it is advisable to arrange it before you start paying out for anything including deposits - that way you’ll be covered if a supplier goes out of business.
