Father of the Bride Speech

People often underestimate how hard it is for the father of the bride to write a speech.

Whilst the father of the bride's speech doesn't have to be particularly funny - it is expected to be sentimental. Telling a few jokes is often a lot easier than finding the 'right words'. If you're worried about being too emotional on the day - include a few light-hearted comments to stop you getting choked up.

Key things to include in the father of the bride speech

  • Welcome everyone to the wedding and thank them for coming. Ensure you make a special mention to anyone who has travelled a long distance.
  • Welcome the groom's parents into the family
  • Say a generic thank you to everyone for their help in the wedding preparation (you may want to add a special thanks to the mother of the bride here)
  • Thank anyone who has helped contribute towards to the cost of the wedding
  • Say a few words about the bride - how beautiful she looks, how proud you are and a story or two about her life before marriage
  • Welcome your new son-in-law (the groom) in to your family
  • Give the couple some advice about married life (the perfect opportunity to inject some humour)
  • Propose a toast to the bride & groom and wish them all the happiness in the future

If there is not a master of ceremonies - you may be required to introduce the groom to speak once you have finished.
