What to wear

Traditionally, the key men (groom, best man, ushers, fathers of the bride and groom) wear matching or co-ordinating outfits that are usually hired for the event. Sometimes the men are asked to wear their own suits and co-ordinate colours. Whilst the groom may pay for the hire of the clothing for all the men, it is common nowadays for everyone to pay for their own hire so this is something you should expect to pay for.

If the suits are being hired, measurements will need to be taken well in advance (usually 2 months before the wedding). If the best man is responsible for organising the fittings for all the groomsmen you should ensure that everyone knows where they need to get fitted and by when. You will need to check that they have done so.

If it is your responsibility to collect the suits before the wedding – check that all the sizes are as ordered and suits are complete before taking them home. It may be too late if you don’t check them until you get home or even worse on the wedding day itself.

Buttonholes are small flowers often worn by the male attendants and key male guests. The flowers should be positioned upright through the button hole on the left lapel and fixed in place with a pin through the back of the lapel. If these are provided, the ushers are responsible for handing these out.
