Groom

A groom traditionally had little involvement in wedding planning but nowadays are more hands on

Traditionally, grooms had little involvement in planning their wedding but nowadays, they are a lot more hands on.

The groom is usually responsible for working out the wedding budget, keeping track of costs and organising the legal aspects of getting married. Whilst the bride will probably organise much of the wedding, she will need your help. Don't wait to be asked - offer to help and make sure it's always there if needed.

Everyone in the wedding party has a different role to play. To understand how everyone can help, familiarise yourself with their different roles.

Before you set the date, you'll need to make some key decisions with your fiancee. A wedding checklist is essential for keeping track of what needs to be done and when.

The main duties of the groom include:

  • Setting the wedding budget
  • Choosing the venue and wedding suppliers. Read our wedding guides section for help and advice before choosing your suppliers.
  • Choosing the groomsmen
  • Buying the wedding rings
  • Choosing suits for the groomsmen
  • Buying gifts to say thank you
  • Buying a gift for the bride
  • Having a stag party
  • Arranging first night accommodation for you and your bride
  • Booking the honeymoon
  • Making a speech

See the groom's list of things to do for more detail and advice.
