Tips for the Ushers

The following advice will get you prepared and help you to perform your usher duties as well as possible:

  • Ensure you have a clear idea of your duties on the day – check with the best man what is expected of you on the day as this can vary depending on the type of wedding
  • Find out if you need to do anything in advance e.g. whether you need to take the buttonholes and orders of service to the ceremony or whether you need to bring large umbrellas to escort the guests
  • Visit the venue (if it’s not too far away) to enable you to get your bearings – find out how to get there, how long it takes and where to park
  • Find out where the toilets are
  • Familiarise yourself with the days timings. No later than a week before - ask the best man or groom if a schedule of timings is available
  • Ensure you have copies of maps, taxi numbers and a mobile to help guests get from the ceremony to the venue
  • Make sure you look presentable – having your hair cut and polishing your shoes is a must
  • Try not to drink too much especially if you need to help someone find transport home at the end of the evening
