Wedding Invitation Wording

Wedding invitations are traditionally sent by the parents of the bride as ‘hosts’. If their parents are divorced or deceased or the bride and groom are hosting, the wedding invitation wording will need to reflect this.

Other factors affecting your choice of wedding invitation wording include the formality of the wedding and whether the invitation is to the day or evening reception.

As a guide, wedding invitations should include details of:

  • the hosts
  • the bride and groom
  • the relationship between the hosts and the bride and groom
  • names of the guests being invited (and/or ‘plus one’ if required)
  • whether the invite is for the wedding ceremony and reception, reception only or evening reception only
  • details of the ceremony and reception venue, including location
  • time and date
  • RSVP – with details of where the reply should be sent. It is useful to include a telephone number or email so that guests can ask any questions before responding.
  • a deadline to reply by

Nowadays, many wedding invitations include an information sheet detailing:

  • how to get there and a map
  • local accommodation
  • local taxi firms
  • wedding gift list – see gift list wording
  • requests for any special dietary requirements or preferences for red or white wine!
  • anything else that needs a mention – such as song requests!

nofreetime tips

  • By including a telephone number, there is a risk that someone will RSVP by phone only. If they dial the wrong number – you may never get their message. This can be overcome by following up outstanding responses after the RSVP date.
